The results were clear; 94% of students said they were in favour of implementing a plan.
Now that plan is here! Health & Dental Insurance:

  • Prescription Drugs: 80% coverage, Annual Maximum $2,000/family member/year.

  • Professional Services (i.e. Chiropractor, Massage Therapist, Psychologist): 80% coverage, Annual maximum of $800/family member/year.

  • Vision (prescription glasses & contact lenses): 80% coverage up to a Maximum of $200 every 24 months.

  • Travel Coverage: 100% coverage up to a Maximum of $1,000,000 (For out of province or out of country trips up to 30 days in length).

  • Dental Coverage: 70% coverage with an annual maximum of $750/family member/year (Cleanings, polishing, fillings, x-rays, extractions, endodontics, periodontics). Check-ups every 6 months.

Critical Illness Insurance:

  • Coverage of $15,000 benefit.

  • Payable upon the diagnosis of 1 of 23 Insured conditions plus survival period.

  • Partial benefits payable for 4 conditions.

How do I know if I am covered by the extended health and dental benefits?

  • You will receive an email confirmation with your benefits start date, and once your coverage is active you can download your card from your member portal

  • If you have not received a confirmation email or cannot access your member portal, click here to contact us to opt in for coverage.

What are my coverage effective dates?

  • Coverage starts as early as the 1st of the next month after you apply.

  • Coverage is available for as long as you are an active student at Athabasca University!

Do I need to submit a prescription with my claim?

  • For pharmacy claims, the pharmacy will submit the claim directly to the insurance company on your behalf and you will not be required to submit the prescription unless requested in the insurance company as part of an audit.

  • For claims related to certain medical services and supplies, a prescription is required usually from a physician outlining the diagnosis and treatment required.

Do students at different campuses have the same coverage?

  • No.

I am a mature student, at what age will my coverage terminate?

  • Age 70

I'm graduating this year, how can I get coverage after graduation?

  • Individual health plans are available after graduation here

How can I see if my medication is covered under my benefits

  • The pharmacy can confirm if your medication is covered under the provincial formulary, or call the insurer directly at 1-800-265-4556

What if the pharmacy says my medication isn't covered?

  • The covered list of drugs is limited to your provincial formulary, and you may speak with your physician and pharmacy to find a potential therapeutic substitute that may be covered under the formulary.

How do I check if dental work will be covered?

  • Your dental office can usually send in a quote to the insurance company electronically to confirm coverage, or you can upload the quote from the dental office through the Equitable Life claims portal.

If I've lost my parental coverage, can I opt into the benefits?

  • Yes, within 30 days of losing your parental coverage, or upon the next re-enrollment campaign

How do I submit a claim?

  • Login to the Equitable Health portal here to submit a claim. Make sure to activate your account if you haven't already!

What is my Group Policy Number and Identification Number?

  • The Group Policy Number is 815082

  • Identification number can be seen on your ID card and within your member portal.

How long do I have to submit a claim?

  • 12 months from the date of service, or within 90 days of termination of coverage.

How long does it take for my claim to be processed?

  • Generally 3-5 business days.

How can I check on the status of a claim, or obtain my claim history?

Can do I coordinate my benefits with a spousal plan?

  • Yes.

How do I get a letter confirming that I have travel coverage?
